Initial Filling Procedure

  • Apply the Petroleum Jelly on the terminals
  • Remove the filling plugs and sealed cap
  • Fill the dilute sulphuric acid (should confirm to IS 266) of 1.240 ± 0.005 specific gravity for kick start vehicle application and 1.270 ± 0.005 for self start vehicles upto the maximum level mark at 27°C
  • Allow the battery to cool for 30 minutes
  • Check the level and restore the level to the maximum mark
  • Ensure positive and negative terminals are connected properly to the corresponding charger terminals to avoid reverse charging
  • Select proper voltage and specified current for charging.
  • Ensure the connections are tight before switching on the charger
  • Continue charging at the specified rate approximately 8-12 hrs till the cells are gassing freely and voltage remains same for 3 consecutive readings on a hourly basis with a terminal voltage of 16V for 12V battery and 8V for 6V batteries
  • Confirm specific gravity in all cells are identical as per the requirement of 1.230 to 1.240 & 1.270 to 1.280 at 27°C

CAUTION

  • Keep the charger “OFF” before connecting or disconnecting batteries
  • Do not allow the battery temperature to exceed 50C. Stop charging and allow the battery to cool if it exceeds that temp..
  • Keep naked flame, lighted cigarette away from the charging area
  • Charging room should be well ventilated
  • Remove the tape provided on the covering vent hole on the vent plugs.
  • Remove the vent plugs and store them safely.
  • Apply Petroleum Jelly on the terminals.
  • Fill the dilute sulphuric acid (should confirm to IS 266) of 1.240 ± 0.005 @27 º C.
  • Allow the battery to cool for 30 minutes.
  • Check the level and restore the level to the maximum mark with diluted sulphuric acid initially used.
  • Place the removed vent plugs or spare ones just above vent holes.
  • Ensure positive and negative terminals are connected properly to the corresponding charger terminals to avoid reverse charging.
  • Select proper voltage and specified current for charging as given in the table.
  • Ensure the connections are tight before switching on the charger.
  • Continue charging at the specified rate approximately 8-10 hours till all the cells are gassing freely and voltage remains constant for three consecutive hourly readings.
  • Do not allow the battery temperature to exceed 50°C during charging. If it exceeds 50°C, stop charging and allow the battery to cool down to room temperature.
  • Confirm specific gravity are uniform in all cells with in the range of 1.230 to 1.240 at 27°C .
  • Switch OFF the charger, disconnect the charging cables and allow the batteries to cool to room temperature.
  • Check for the electrolyte level if the level is below the minimum level top up with Distilled water (should confirm to IS 1069) up to maximum level and charge the battery for an hour.
  • Keep away naked flamed, lighted cigarette from the charging area because it may cause explosion. Charging room should be well ventilated.
  • Fix the vent plugs back in position by using proper tools.
  • Clean the battery with wet cloth to remove the acid traces and wipe with a dry cloth.
  • Apply petroleum jelly on the terminals.
  • It is preferable to allow the battery to normal room temperature condition before fitment.
  • Remove the tape provided on the covering vent hole on the vent plugs.
  • Remove the vent plugs and store them safely.

  • Initial filling specific Gravity : 1.240 ± 0.010 @ 27°C.
  • Electrolyte Level : Fill until float reaches the top marking on the float guide / fill till the vent plug fixing hole bottom projected portion.
  • Rest / Soaking Period : 4-6 hours, subject to cell temperature.
  • While charging, never allow the cell temperature to exceed more than 50°C. Allow it to cool down to room temperature before continuing the charging process.
  • Initial filling charging can be considered only after obtaining the following conditions.
  • 50 hours of initial charging is required for 6UPS (T&TT series) and 15-20 hours is required for ABP (P series).
  • Specific gravity and voltage should remain constant for three consecutive hourly reading.
  • Top of charge voltage should be between 16.2 to 16.5 volts.
  • All cells should gas freely.
  • Final Specific Gravity : 1.250 ± 0.010 @ 27°C.
  • Variation in acid specific gravity to be adjusted by using distilled / de-mineralised water or diluted battery grade Sulfuric acid. Ensure specific gravity in all cells is equal and the levels are maintaining upto maximum marking on the float.
  • After the above initial treatment, the battery is ready for use and can be connected to the system.

Note :

If the battery is operated continuously in cold climate (i.e. if the average Ambient temperature throughout the year in less than 20°C) contact AMCO for (Specific gravity of initial filling electrolyte) details.

Use Electrolyte as per IS 266

Use distilled water as per IS 1069.
